    The short straps on the vintage (and 40th) backpacks have always been irritating.
    They work if you don't mind Joe wearing his ammo belt up around his arm pits, I guess.
    I think if I added the poncho where it belonged, the shoulder straps would be too short to get Joe's arms into! But those little straps that are supposed to hook to his ammo belt? How useless! I confess I DO have a couple of packs that look ok with 'em hooked to the belt... but they're exceptions, not the rule. Here, Vintage Joe and Club Talker can't figure it out, either. We need a "hints and tips on loading Joe's Field Pack" thread! Hey... this is it!!! Add your tips and ideas here!!!

    I just hook mine across Joe’s chest. I know that it’s not the way that it is supposed to be but looking at modern military backpacks, they have support and stabilizing straps that connect across the chest. Otherwise, I fold them back behind the shoulder straps.
