  • Resin Casting

    Time for a new topic!

Has anybody tried resin casting? Where did you get the supplies? Did you get it in a kit or collect bits and pieces that you need in order to do the casting? I know you can resin cast heads. Has anyone tried to resin cast pistols? Rifles? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

Wow! Nobody's been doing any resin casting? I guess I'll have to figure it out on my own, and post my lessons learned here in the Forum. Gee, I can become the expert! In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King!!!

Dave, I have resin cast a ton of stuff. Mouth of Doom pole (which was copied by 3rd Son Books), a vintage head, the part that the rotor fits into on the Irwin Copter, the valve handle for the deep sea diver helmet and even steering wheels for Hot Wheels cars. I cast in the moment if I can't find the parts. Silicone mold material from Hobby Lobby and also a free sample of silicone I grabbed at Wonderfest Model show. The same goes for the two-part resin. I have a lifetime supply of it in my basement thanks to Wonderfest. If you need resin don't buy it, swing by, I'll hook you up.

My resin casting experience is very limited.
Like Defender stated, silicone molding supplies are readily available, but not cheaply.
This guy has an excellent channel :

Here's a tutorial on rotocasting, which is how heads are usually molded:

Spend some time on his channel and you'll learn some stuff.
        Hope this helps Bubba.

Will do, Scott! I'm thinking I need to resin cast a couple of rifles because I can't find them anywhere. Not sure resin is rugged enough to be used for a rifle, but figured it would be worth a try!

... or maybe I'll wait until the Kentuckiana show rolls around, and see if I can find the rifles I'm looking for, so I don't have to bother making them. ;-). Yeah, I'm lazy.

A rifle will require a two-part mold, not impossible but a bit tricky in silicone. Which rifle are you talking about? The resin hardens up nice but has been known to be brittle at times. I have done well with it, but I stay clear of complicated molding.

Try Matsquatch. I don't know if he makes anything that big, but his other stuff is top quality. He might see this as a challenge and an opportunity. Never know.

Have you considered 3D printing? There's a resin version of that as well, and give great resolution. Might be a bit of a learning curve on how to model what you are trying to replicate, but ton's of already prepared 3D models are available for a ton of things.

I was thinking the same thing. My sister does alot of 3D printing and has printed a few 3 3/4" accessories for me and they are great. Now, I have never done any resin casting, but I would think 3D printing would be easier. BUT, I am sure resin casting is ALOT cheaper. I know printers are not cheap and there is a learning curve. So, there are positives and negatives.

I have a resin printer and it is true there are a lot of STL files out there already. I have not found a good source for weaponry for Joe yet. Mostly star wars and Sci Fi stuff in abundance. But yeah, 3D printing is the stuff!
